GENERAL INFORMATION

Health
A Valid international certificate of vaccination againts smallpox, and inoculation againts cholera and yellow fever is required only for travellers arriving from infected areas. It is recommended for passengers to equip themselves with tablets for stomach upset, and to avoid drinking unboiled water or ice from wayside stalls, while travelling.
Antiseptic creams and insect repellents are useful, also antibiotics for infections, particularly respitory infections. Common sense should be used when eating out. Doctors are available at major hotels or at their private practices. Private clinics are preferable to the Public Hospital. Well-stocked chemists can be found in all major towns including Kuta, Sanur, and Nusa Dua.

Climate
Bali has two seasons, the wet season from November to April and dry season from May to October. A tropical island, it is always warm in the lowlands or coastal areas, with temperatures ranging from 27-35 C , and dropping to 15 C in the highlands. Evening in coastal areas is cooled by pleasant breezes, but in mountain areas can necessitate warmer cloting.

Clothing
Dress is normally casual and light for the hot humid areas. A long-sleeved shirt is fine for evening wear and ladies a simple rock. Jacket and ties are only used for official accasions. Shorts and swimwear are acceptable on the beach and around hotels, but should not be worn to the villages or on visit to town. Take a light sweater or jacket when visiting mountain areas.

Currency
Local Indonesian currency is known as Rupiah. There are no restrictions on the amount of foreign currencies which can be brought into or taken out of the country most foreign currencies and travellers cheques are easily changed. Larger hotels have Banks or money changers in the arcades and Banks are easily found in Kuta, Sanur and Nusa Dua, Ubud and Candi Dasa. It is advisable to change your foreign currency into Rupiah before travelling off the beaten track. Credit cards are not widely accepted, except in first class hotels and some major souvenir shops. The cards most often accepted are American Express, Visa, Bankcard, and Diners.

Shoping
Bali is famous for its woodcarving and sculpture, silver and gold jewerly, woven cloth, sarongs, traditional and realist painting, bone and coconut shell carvings, antiques, basket-ware, and masks. In recent years garment manufacturing has increased and excellent designer garments are available cheaply. Tailoring is cheap and quick. Except in fixed-price stores and restaurants, shopping is done by bergaining, which is almost a national preoccupation. The only rule is both buyer and seller must end up satisfied and not lose face! It can be fun.

Entertainment
As well as superb traditional dances and gamelan orchestras, there are shadow puppet plays, traditional drama & theatre and variety of unique cultural entertainment. Nightlife also abounds in certain areas, with many Night Clubs, Restaurants, and Cafes providing live music and entertainment.
